What to Wear to War – Ephesians 6

Paul says tighten your belt for battle.

What belt you say?

The Roman soldier would cinch tight his belt just before stepping into the battle field.

He did this for a number of reasons:

  • The belt would hold his tunic up which he would then cinch with the belt so it would not impede him as he charged into mortal combat. Ensuring he would not trip over his own garment.
  • It also fixed firmly every other part of his armour and weaponry into its “proper place”.
  • Most importantly it firmly fixed his sword into place giving it full support!

So without this belt being in place, being right, he would be in mortal danger in battle!

Paul calls our belt – TRUTH

Truth forms the crucial function in spiritual warfare.

It holds the spiritual armour in place and safeguards against deadly entanglement.

2Ti 2:4 No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life, that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier.

Our belt of truth in our armour is the truth of the Word of God, the scriptures, the Bible.

You and I are perplexed and confused apart from truth.

You need the truth as animals do not – not just the truth of the physical sciences and mathematics, but the truth about your being:

  • your beginnings – Gen 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Gen 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over allfn the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Gen 1:27 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being.
  • your purpose, Rev 4:11 Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.
  • your conflicts, In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. Rom 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. Rom 8:38 For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, Rom 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
  • your future, Jhn 14:1 “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. Jhn 14:2 “In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. Jhn 14:3 “And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.

Without God’s Word, His truth, we would not have a chance in spiritual battles which come our way.

Martin Luther, memorized the entire Bible in Latin which enabled him to be able to stand before his accusers who sought to condemn his stand against the error of the church in his time.

Just how does the enemy attack you here?

With his lies….”Is there really a God, is the Bible true, aren’t you just wasting your time, how do you know you are right, how do you know you are saved?”

You’ve had a very difficult week. You have been under severe attack from the enemy and doubt about your salvation fills your mind. Satan whispers his poison of lies in your ear….”You call yourself a Christian?”

But wonderfully the Holy Spirit, Who Jesus says would Jhn 16:13 “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come.

How do you know you’re a Christian?

Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Rom 10:10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.

Without cinching ourselves tightly with the truth of God’s Word, our weapons would clatter and fall in disarray.

But there is another truth that Paul is emphasizing here which I believe is just as important!

That is the truth we LIVE OUT as followers of Jesus Christ!

It’s our openness to God, our very relationship with Him.

This is vital to Christian safety and essential for the proper and correct operation of all the other pieces of our armour.

May the TRUTH set you free this week!
